Texans’ Azeez Al-Shaair comes under scrutiny for Trevor Lawrence’s pro-Palestinian cleats

Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shair came under scrutiny Sunday when his second-quarter hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence knocked the player out of the game.

Lawrence tried to slip when Al-Shair hit the Jaguars star in the head and neck area. The hit sparked a fight and resulted in the ejection of Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones. Al-Shair found himself in the middle of a fight that took place after the play.

The Jaguars ruled Lawrence out for the remainder of the game as he was diagnosed with a concussion.

The goal wasn’t the only thing Al-Shair was criticized for.

The linebacker participated in the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign. Players who take part in the campaign will be able to choose a cause that is important to them and represent the organization on their boots. Like last year, Al-Shair chose the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

On one side of his shoes, Al-Shair had written “Free” in the colors of the Palestinian flag. On one shoe was written: “Truly, we belong to Allah and to Him we will all return.” On the other side was the number of Palestinians reportedly killed and wounded in the war with Israel.

“The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), founded in 1991 by dedicated humanitarian workers in the United States, provides free medical care annually to thousands of injured and sick children who do not have local access to medical care through the local health system,” says the description of the PCRF on its website.

“Over the years, we have sent over 2,000 affected children abroad for free medical care, deployed thousands of international doctors and nurses to provide free medical care to tens of thousands of children in local hospitals, and provided tens of thousands of children with humanitarian support that they would not otherwise receive would get.

There was a lot of criticism on social media.

Al-Shair spoke about his decision to wear the boots last month.

“I feel like it’s something that’s almost meant to be silenced,” he told the Houston Chronicle. “On both sides it is not right for people to lose their lives. I am in no way confirming anything that happened, but to consistently say that because of (October 7th) innocent people should now die (in Gaza), that’s crazy.

COMMANDERS, TITANS PLAYERS get into heated arguments amid early dominance

(Other people) are trying to alienate and dehumanize the people there. And it’s like they’re human. As a Muslim we all see the same; Black, white, Spanish, whatever you are; You can be orange, we are all human.”

Al-Shaair is also part of the Athletes For Ceasefire organization along with several other athletes.

The group has called on President Biden to call for an “immediate ceasefire” in the war in Gaza following Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7.

“We call on President Joe Biden to call for an immediate ceasefire. And to redirect those resources to urgent domestic needs such as education, health care and assistance to the homeless,” the group stated on its website.
