Missing Hawaii woman intentionally missed her flight, police say, family disagrees

Hannah Kobayashi intentionally missed her connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York City, police say, although her family disagrees.

The missing Hawaii woman, 30, landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on November 8th as she was scheduled to catch a connecting flight to Manhattan. However, Hannah never made it onto the plane, her family told Fox affiliate KHON.

Three days later, on November 11, her location was last registered on Hannah’s phone at LAX. This was also the last time anyone in her family heard from her. Hannah’s aunt, Larie Pidgeon, later wrote on Facebook on November 14 that the recent text messages her family had received from her were “alarming.”

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said at a Los Angeles police commissioners meeting on November 26 that police determined that Hannah intentionally missed her flight that day.

“On Friday, November 8, 23-year-old Hannah Kobayashi missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York, which the investigation determined was intentional,” McDonnell said.

“On November 15, our missing persons unit took over investigative responsibility. “Investigators carefully reviewed video surveillance and used a variety of investigative techniques to locate Hannah, while her family continued their personal search efforts,” he continued, adding that authorities “remain fully committed to finding Hannah.”

On Saturday, November 30, Hannah’s mother and sister spoke out about the police investigation in a statement shared on Facebook and seen by PEOPLE.

Hannah’s sister said that “it does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight” and claimed that she and her family “did not know about the alleged findings presented at the Los Angeles Police Commission meeting until us.” “Several citizens sent several videos from the meeting.” .”

“These alleged findings have yet to be communicated to my mother and me directly by the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department or any other detective involved in Hannah’s case,” Hannah’s sister continued.

The mother and daughter further claimed that certain details McDonnell shared about the case at the meeting were inaccurate.

“Certain facts contained in this report were inaccurate, such as Hannah’s age. “Hannah is 30 years old, not 23,” the couple wrote. “In addition, Hannah was reported missing to law enforcement on November 11th, not November 13th, as stated by the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.”

“The lack of communication on some key details has left us feeling excluded from potentially crucial developments. However, we remain confident and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in its power to assist us in finding Hannah,” the statement continued.

The LAPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, December 1.

Hannah’s mother and sister also said in their statement that they were “devastated by Hannah’s disappearance and now the death of my father Ryan.”

Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, who traveled to Los Angeles to look for his daughter, died by suicide on Nov. 24, two weeks after his daughter’s disappearance, according to the LA County Medical Examiner.

His cause of death was multiple traumatic blunt force injuries, according to the coroner’s report reviewed by PEOPLE.

Concluding her social media statement, Hannah’s mother and sister said it was “completely out of character” for her to “just disappear without a trace.”

“We remain deeply concerned for Hannah’s safety, well-being (sic) and current mental state,” they wrote. “Hannah, if you happen to see this, know that we will not give up or stop searching until we find you. We know that you would never do this on your own initiative unless you feel threatened or unwell. We know how much you love us all, and we love you deeply.”
