The long wait for a Trey McBride touchdown catch

Well, Trey McBride is going to catch a touchdown, right? After 11 games, we’ve seen plenty of catches, but none of them have resulted in a touchdown.

I don’t understand it. He was the trusted safety belt in the 1920s, racking up 61 catches to date. But when the team gets into the red zone, they turn their attention to Marvin Harrison. Kyler Murray threw 12 touchdowns. Harrison caught half of them, while McBride caught none (though he did catch 25 more passes than his rookie receiver).

McBride had a similar season in his senior year at Colorado State with 90 catches and just one touchdown.

McBride has two touchdowns (one on a run and one on a heads-up fumble recovery), but no touchdowns. This gives him the chance to become the most successful tight end in NFL history who did not score.

Looking at historical numbers, only one tight end has finished a season with more catches without a score – Steve Jordan of the Minnesota Vikings in 1985, who caught 68 passes without a score. With another productive (and scoreless) game, McBride could pass Jordan today.

Only four tight ends have had more than 60 scoreless possessions in a season, and strangely, all but one have come from the last four years – McBride, 2023 Tyler Conklin and 2021 Cole Kmet.
