Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was sidelined with a concussion after suffering a late hit in the team’s game against the division rival Houston Texans on Sunday.

In the second quarter, Lawrence was hit in the head by Texas linebacker Azeez Al-Shair after a six-yard run. With Lawrence on the ground, a scuffle broke out between the two teams.

Al-Shaair was ejected from the game along with Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones for the ensuing fight. Jacksonville tight end Evan Engram received a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness.

The 25-year-old Lawrence was eventually carried off the field on a cart and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.

The Jaguars lost 23-20 and fell to 2-10 on the season as their disappointing season continued.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones replaced Lawrence and threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

After the game, Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson said he saw Lawrence at halftime, adding that he would be “fine” and that he would enter the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Pederson was asked if he thought the piece was “dirty,” which he described as “unfortunate.”

“It’s a game that no one in our league wants to see,” Pederson said. “Of course you see what happens after the fact and it just escalates. I have a lot of respect for (Texans) coach (Demeco) Ryans and I know he doesn’t coach his team that way. We don’t coach our team like that. It’s unfortunate. That’s it really. I’m just glad Trevor (Lawrence) is going to be okay. … It’s just an unfortunate game.”

Pederson shut down any speculation that Lawrence would be suspended for the season, calling it too early to make such a decision.

Ryans also used the word “unfortunate” when describing the situation and Al-Shaair’s decision on the play.

“That’s not what we train for,” Ryans said. “We want to be smart in everything we do. … You just have to be smarter when the quarterback goes down. Unlucky game. Not representative of who Azeez (Al-Shair) is. Azeez is a smart player. A really great leader for us.

“That’s not what we train for, you don’t want to see if there’s a scuffle and all the consequences. That’s not what we’re concerned about. Not representative of us. I will talk to Azeez, I will speak to him personally and we will move on.”

Lawrence, a former first-overall pick out of Clemson in 2021, had missed the last two games with a shoulder injury. He has thrown for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games played.

The Jaguars are scheduled to play on the road next week at the Tennessee Titans.
