49ers RB Christian McCaffrey says he’s feeling better

Christian McCaffrey is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry this season since returning from bilateral Achilles tendonitis.

Here’s what McCaffrey said about his performance this week in the 49ers locker room.

Q: How do you rate your performance currently?

McCAFFREY: “I feel like I’m doing a lot better. You often have to manage your expectations, but for me at the moment it’s not about anything statistical, it’s just about getting better every day. I know that I’m doing what I’m happy about. My mindset is always the same whether I succeed or fail. If you lose and don’t stand out on the stat sheet, your mistakes will be highlighted, but I’ve always done it the same way. There are things that happen when you have big games that I’ve been annoyed about throughout my career. Nothing will change. I’m better, I know who I am, I just know that it will come with time.

Q: How do you manage expectations?

McCAFFREY: “You take it one day at a time. You just get better every day. That’s the only thing you can ever do.”

Q: Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo aren’t getting the touches they did when you were out. How do you feel when you leave the field? Your coaches always say you don’t want to leave the huddle.

McCAFFREY: “If I feel like I can’t do my best out there, I leave the field. I don’t manage my own snapshots, is my short answer. When I’m out there, I’m going full throttle. I’m ready to go. It would probably be shared a lot more if it weren’t for some of the positions our offense has gotten into over the last few weeks. That’s why I think narratives and general statements can always be discussed Look at the time and see Why do situations happen? But we’ll just keep chopping wood.
