Saints’ Derek Carr speaks emotionally about Taysom Hill’s injury | Saints

After the New Orleans Saints’ 21-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, a focused Derek Carr’s mood immediately changed from responsible leader to somber friend when the topic of Taysom Hill’s injury came up.

“It’s the worst. I don’t know anything, you all probably know more than I do,” Carr told the media in his postgame press conference. “Just as a brother and as a friend because at this moment it is more important than football. You know, his family, his kids, his wife, you know, everyone. And your heart just breaks.”

Hill, the Saints’ all-rounder, was carted off the field late in the fourth quarter after converting a fourth-down run on a quarterback draw. Although he was listed as doubtful during the game like Carr, Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi said he knew nothing about the severity of the injury and didn’t want to talk about it in detail yet because he knew the serious injuries he had seen throughout his career looks good and minor injuries look bad.

“(Rams) coach (Sean) McVay was heartbroken for him,” Carr continued. “(Matthew) Stafford comes to me and talks to me with a broken heart. In that moment, the part of the game and the competition kind of stops and you just feel bad for someone, especially like that.”

Carr applauded the New Orleans fans’ reaction to the injury.

“I love the way our fans treated him,” Carr said. “And I wouldn’t expect anything less from our fans. If one of our guys is out, they’re great. They support our guys whether it was great or not. That made me happy to be there for him in that moment because that’s it. Not a good moment, but that was really cool.

When asked if he thought Hill’s injury had a negative impact on the team’s attitude heading into the game, Carr quickly responded back to the stern professional who made no excuses for his team’s recent loss.

“I feel like we were able to compartmentalize it,” Carr said. “It’s such a violent sport. Honestly, I thought our focus was fine…Taysom gets hurt and our attitude changed to, ‘Let’s do it for her!'”

Next up for the Saints is an away game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, with kickoff taking place on December 8th at 12 p.m.
