The men made it appear a suicide by shooting John, placing a bottle of oxycodone next to his body and leaving the gun in John’s hand.

Audiences learned that Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) was responsible for hiring the hitmen to kill John, and after a fight with Jamie (Wes Bentley) last week, she drove away and was shot in the head.

The series begins in episode 12 when Kayce and his sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) learn that their adopted brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) is under investigation after investigators arrive at Jamie’s home and inquire about Sarah’s death.

As Kayce and Beth work to stop their brother from speaking to the authorities and subsequently revealing their father’s secrets, another death occurs on the ranch.

Just hours after confessing his love to Teeter, ranch hand Colby (Denim Richards) comes to the aid of Carter, a teenager taken in at the Dutton ranch when Carter is trapped and cornered in a stable by a restless horse becomes. When Colby lets Carter escape, the horse kicks Colby right in the chest, killing him. Carter shoots the horse, but Colby cannot be saved.

Colby appeared in seasons 1 and 2 before becoming a regular in season 3.

At the end of the episode, the drama returns to John’s death as Kayce packs his things and leaves for the night to do “what’s best for the ranch.”

After discovering the identity of the person connected to the shadowy organization that orchestrated John’s suicide through an old military contact, Kayce tracks down the murderous man at his daughter’s soccer game.

As the man and his daughter try to drive away after the game, Kayce jumps into her car, holds the daughter at gunpoint and tells the man to drive. He threatens the killer, saying he knows where his family works and lives, and hits the man in the head with his gun while telling the girl in a menacing voice, “You should cry.”

Kayce threatens to kill them both if they turn around as he jumps out of their car.

There are still two episodes left of the hit series, which is coming to an end after five seasons. Fans have been waiting for the Duttons to come back to screens for almost two years since the midseason finale. But this summer they learned that Costner would no longer be continuing in his role.

“When he didn’t come back, he felt like, ‘Okay, we really need to land this plane now,'” Grimes told PEOPLE about Costner’s exit. “I think the departure of the patriarch would always be a part of the story. That was always the question: What are these children doing? What does this family do when their stone is gone?”

Although he acknowledges the “drama” that came before it Yellowstone‘s return to filming – including scheduling conflicts between Costner Horizon: An American Saga And Yellowstone That led to the Oscar winner stepping away from his role in the series in June – Grimes adds that he felt “it was always going to be this way.”

“Whatever the circumstances, it definitely felt like, ‘Okay, we’re about to land,'” he says of Costner’s absence. “It definitely felt different.”

New episodes of Yellowstone airs Sundays at 8:00 pm ET/PT on Paramount Network.
