The Eagles’ physicality is on display in “Beating Ravens,” 24-19

BALTIMORE – During their eight-game winning streak, there hasn’t been a more physical team than the Eagles. The Baltimore Ravens should be their counterpart. Not.

Hard and physical. Those were the two key words head coach Nick Sirianni used repeatedly after the Eagles’ 24-19 victory over the Ravens on Sunday. a win that moved them to 10-2 with four home games in their final five of the season, starting Sunday with a visit from the Carolina Panthers.

“They had to match our (physicality),” the coach said. “We know we’re a physical team, (and) we know they’re a physical team. That was our message, that they have to fit our physicality.”

“We just kept moving forward and consistently committed to football. They were very determined to show how physical we were.”

Do you know when a team is losing the battle of physicality? In the fourth quarter, with the clock ticking down to nine minutes left. At that point, Saquon Barkley completed a 14-yard run, which was followed by an 11-yard dash from Jalen Hurts. Barkley then ran 25 yards for a touchdown that put the game virtually out of reach and made the score 10-2 for the Eagles.

“Anytime you play a physical team and you call yourself a physical team, you find out who’s going to play physical and who’s going to give up,” receiver AJ Brown said. “Two teams met (Sunday) and I think (Sunday) we were the tougher team.”

On Barkley’s touchdown run, Jordan Mailata moved inside and locked down the Ravens, then receivers Jahan Doston and Parris Campbell made appearances running routes to draw the defense away, then delivered blocks down the field to create a lane for Barkley to score a goal.

The Ravens were beaten on the spot.

“Our identity is physical, and when you question that, we’re going to show up and be more physical,” said linebacker Zack Baun, who once again had an outstanding performance, making 13 tackles, with a half-sack, a forced fumble and a tackle for loss.

“I think a lot of guys on this defense and on this team were underdogs for a long time and had a chip on their shoulder. I know I did it and I know Nakobe did it… We want to bond teams together and we want to wear them down and that’s what we did.”

Dean also made 10 tackles. Jalen Carter delivered another dominant game, recording a sack, giving him a 4.5 on the season, and three tackles for a loss against Derrick Henry. Jordan Davis also contributed to a rushing defense that held Henry to 82 yards rushing and 4.3 yards per carry, well below his season average of 6.0. Nolan Smith is also getting better and better. He had eight tackles with another sack, giving him a score of 4.5 this season.

“Coach can only say so much,” safety CJ Gardner-Johnson said. “You have to want to go out and attack one of the best running backs in the game, chase one of the best two-way quarterbacks in the league. This is a game of choice.”
