The auction bid for Onion’s Infowars is still pending for a few weeks

A judge on Monday scheduled a hearing on The Onion’s bid for Infowars for next month, leaving the satirical news site’s purchase of Alex Jones’ media company in limbo for at least a few more weeks.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez has scheduled another hearing for December to decide whether to proceed with the purchase of Infowars at auction The Onion and its parent company Global Tetrahedron, was fair. He also declined to issue an injunction to disqualify the satirical website’s offering at Jones’ request.

“I want a fair and transparent process, and let’s see where that process goes,” Lopez said. “Everyone will have their day in court.”

The Onion announced Nov. 14 that it had purchased Infowars at auction and plans to turn it into a website that parodies characters like Jones. The Onion’s offer was supported by some families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims, whose successful defamation suit against Jones forced him into bankruptcy.

But Jones and the losing bidder, First United American Companies (FUAC), accused the trustee overseeing the auction of collusion with The Onion and Sandy Hook families. FUAC – a company affiliated with one of Jones’ online supplement stores – said it spent twice as much money as that Winning bid. However, the Onion’s offer included a promise by the families to forgo a portion of the proceeds so that other creditors would receive more money than the higher cash offer, which the trustee believed was better for the creditors.

Although Infowars was removed on the day the auction sale was announced, it has since been returned to Jones as litigation over the auction process has resumed, and Jones has continued to broadcast.

Also Elon Musk’s X Corp. intervened in the case and filed a complaint. As NBC News reported: “X Corp. is believed to be is an interested party because Jones is using X to broadcast his show and the case involves the possible transfer of Jones’ X handle as part of the sale.”

Lopez, the bankruptcy judge, will ultimately decide whether to approve the sale of Infowars to The Onion order a new auction of Infowars intellectual property and website or Award of Infowars to FUAC, the replacement bidder.
