Christian McCaffrey’s tumultuous 2024 NFL season may finally be over.

The 49ers’ star running back suffered a potentially season-ending PCL injury in the 49ers’ 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Highmark Stadium, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game. According to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area, McCaffrey left the San Francisco locker room after the game on crutches and with a brace on his right knee.

McCaffrey fell to the ground on a carry in the second quarter on Sunday and immediately jogged to the 49ers sideline before ultimately exiting with a right knee injury.

“It was frustrating,” Shanahan said of McCaffrey’s injury, which occurred when the running back appeared to be on the verge of leaving San Francisco. “He had a great week of training and I could feel his urgency and everything. I thought he did great and looked really good… I hurt for him and it was hard for our team not to have him.”

Before leaving the game, McCaffrey had 53 yards on seven carries, including a season-high 19-yard run in the first quarter. He also had two receptions for 14 yards.

The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year made his season debut in Week 10 after missing the first half of the 49ers’ season with bilateral Achilles tendonitis. Now it remains to be seen whether he will be back on the field for San Francisco this season.
