Cris Collinsworth had the perfect metaphor for the 49ers’ costly fumble against the Bills

If you didn’t know the San Francisco 49ers were Super Bowl contenders last season, you might not believe it now. The 5-6 team is coming off a frustrating season marked by multiple injuries to its top stars – including running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Deebo Samuel – and is simply not playing at the level fans want expected.

Case in point: this week Football on Sunday evenings Matchup against the Buffalo Bills in which a mistake in the red zone nearly increased the Bills’ already large lead. San Francisco was first-and-scoring at the Buffalo 5-yard line when QB Brock Purdy passed the ball to fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who dropped it just inches, if at all, from the goal line. Then the Bills’ Christian Benford picked up the ball and ran it to midfield, where Purdy eventually stopped it.

In the end, Buffalo didn’t convert the play into a touchdown, but it was still a big win for the Niners — and one commentator, Cris Collinsworth, summed it up with the perfect metaphor: “This is the 49ers’ season,” he said. He compares the game being so close and yet so far away to San Francisco’s struggles in recent weeks.
