Josh Allen makes NFL history as Bills’ win streak reaches seven, plus a big day for Steelers QB Russell Wilson

First, the San Francisco 49ers were buried under a snowstorm in Western New York.

Then they were buried by the Buffalo Bills.

After a total of four touchdowns by quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills defeated the 49ers 35-10 on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” securing a playoff spot and winning Buffalo’s fifth consecutive AFC East title.

The Bills’ dominant team result was the result of Allen’s individual brilliance. Allen was given a prime-time opportunity to boost his candidacy for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award by throwing for 148 yards and two touchdowns, running for an 8-yard touchdown and even scoring as a receiver as the snow fell.

In the third quarter, Allen completed a pass to Amari Cooper, who was quickly surrounded by 49ers defenders and threw a lateral to Allen, who sprinted past and dove for a touchdown. Allen became the first quarterback in NFL history to score running, passing and receiving touchdowns in a single game.

After falling behind 3-0, the Bills scored the next 28 points, easily taking control and improving to 10-2, including 6-0 at home.

A miserable season continued for the 49ers (5-7) when running back Christian McCaffrey limped to the sideline in the first half and later to the locker room with what the team said was a knee injury. The non-contact injury occurred less than a month after McCaffrey made his season debut after being sidelined for two months with Achilles tendonitis in both legs. To add insult to injury, star linebacker Fred Warner also later left the game. Neither of them returned.

Around the league

  • Twelve games were decided by seven points or fewer, the most in a single week in NFL history. In three of those victories – by the Indianapolis Colts, the Minnesota Vikings and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – the decisive plays came in the final minute of the fourth quarter or in overtime.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers outlasted the Cincinnati Bengals with a 44:38 away win. Quarterback Russell Wilson had a top-notch performance, throwing for 414 yards and three touchdowns to lift his team to 9-3. Cincinnati, a playoff contender entering the season, is just 4-8.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was stretchered off the field with a head injury late in the first half of his team’s 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans. As he rushed for a first down and slipped, Texas linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair collided with him. Al-Shair was deported for the illegal attack. Lawrence later said on social media that he was “at home and feeling better.”
