Elton John says he lost his sight when he told audience: ‘I can’t see the stage’

Elton John shares another update on his eyesight.

During the opening premiere of The The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical In London on Sunday, December 1, the 77-year-old musician addressed the audience and revealed that he was unable to see the show due to his eyesight.

“As some of you may know, I have been struggling and now I have lost my sight. I didn’t get to see the performance, but I enjoyed it,” the Grammy winner said on stage Daily Mail.

The outlet reported that the musician’s husband, David Furnish, helped him get off the stage. John also praised Furnish, 62, for helping him with his vision problems, telling the crowd: “To my husband, who has been my rock because I couldn’t get to many previews… I find it hard to see that.”, but I love hearing it and it sounded good tonight.

The “Rocket Man” singer revealed that he had contracted an infection in an Instagram post back in September, stating at the time that he only had “limited vision in one eye.”

“I am recovering, but it is an extremely slow process and it will take some time before the affected eye can see again,” he wrote at the time.

“I am so grateful to the outstanding medical and nursing team and my family who have looked after me so well over the last few weeks,” John continued. “I have spent the summer quietly recuperating at home and am positive about the progress I have made so far in my healing and recovery.”

In an interview with Good morning America In November, John confirmed he had lost vision in his right eye during a holiday in July. The vision loss was due to an eye infection he contracted while spending the summer in the south of France, he noted.

“It kind of blew me away and I can’t see anything. I can’t read anything, I can’t see anything,” he explained. He added that his “left eye is not the best” which prevented him from reading texts, but said that he was “taking the initiative to try to do better.”

Elsewhere in the GMA In the interview, John shared that it had been “a while since I last did anything in the studio.”

“There’s hope and encouragement that it’s going to be good, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment… going into the studio and recording, I don’t know,” he said.
