4 million people are on winter storm alert as Buffalo remains covered in snow across the rest of the Great Lakes region

More than 4 million people in five states were under a winter storm warning Sunday as heavy snow continued to blanket the Great Lakes region, prompting emergency declarations and the deployment of National Guard troops to rescue stranded motorists.

Sunday saw another day of intense lake-effect snow bands, particularly in Western New York, where more than 40 inches of snow has already fallen since Thursday and up to 24 inches more is expected Sunday through Monday.

Parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin were under winter alert as of Sunday.

Lake effect snow is common this time of year as colder air flows over the relatively warm waters of the lakes, resulting in extremely localized heavy snowfall over an extended period of time.

“An intense lake effect band in Watertown and Jefferson County will continue to produce rates of 3 to 4 inches per hour today,” the National Weather Service in Buffalo said in a social media post Sunday.
