Elton John says he still can’t see, months after suffering a serious eye infection.

Speaking on stage at a gala performance of the musical The Devil Wears Prada in London on Sunday, John thanked his husband David Furnish and said he “was my rock.”

“I wasn’t able to attend many of the previews because, as you know, I lost my eyesight. That’s why it’s hard for me to see it. But I love hearing it and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” John said.

In an interview with Good Morning America last week, John said the problem has affected his ability to work.

“Unfortunately I lost my vision in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France and I haven’t been able to see for four months now and my left eye isn’t so good anymore,” he said.

“So there’s hope and encouragement that it’s going to be good, but… I’m kind of stuck right now because I can do something like that (the interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see any text at first.”

John, 77, first spoke publicly about his vision problem in September, when he shared on his Instagram page that he was “struggling with a serious eye infection which has unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye.” .

“I am recovering, but it is an extremely slow process and it will take some time before the affected eye can see again,” John wrote, thanking the “outstanding team of doctors, nurses and my family” for making me so took good care of him.

“I have spent the summer quietly recovering at home,” he wrote, adding that he is “confident about the progress I have made so far in my healing and recovery.”

While John officially retired from touring in 2023 after decades of live performances, he wrote the music for the musical The Devil Wears Prada. It is based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, which was also made into a film in 2006.
