Mets sign ex-Yankees trade bust to bolster rotation

According to multiple reports Sunday evening, the Mets and right-hander Frankie Montas have agreed to terms on a two-year, $34 million contract.

Montas is the Mets’ first free agent signing in what is expected to be a busy offseason for the team. He will join a depleted Mets rotation that lost Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Jose Quintana to free agency after the 2024 season.

The deal includes a release clause for Montas after his first season.

The 31-year-old returns to New York, where he spent an injury-plagued time with the Yankees in 2022/23. The Yankees got Montas at the 2022 trade deadline in a deal with the Oakland A’s, but he wasn’t fully healthy and made just eight starts for New York this season.

He then missed almost the entire 2023 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last offseason. He was activated on September 30 of that year and made a bullpen appearance in the second-to-last game of the season, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings against the Royals.

Last offseason, Montas signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Reds and was traded to the Brewers at the deadline. He posted a 4.84 ERA over 150 2/3 combined innings and opted out of his 2025 shared option with Cincinnati.
