UND names Isaac Fruechte interim head football coach – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS – One day after UND announced that Bubba Schweigert would be stepping down as head coach, Isaac Fruechte was named interim coach.

Fruechte, 33, just completed his first season as offensive coordinator at UND, leading an offense that averaged more than 30.0 points per game.

Fruechte came to Grand Forks from Winona State. The 6-foot-11 former Minnesota Gophers and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver also has coaching stints at Wisconsin-La Crosse, Winona State, Northern State and Northern Iowa.

UND’s 2024 offense ranked 13th in the FCS in red zone scoring, 18th in third-down conversion percentage (45.6 percent), 20th in time of possession (31:32) and 20th 25 in rushing offense (186.9 yards per game).

On Saturday afternoon, UND said Schweigert would resign to take a position in the school’s athletic department.

The Fighting Hawks went 5-7 in 2024 and lost five straight games to close the year after earning a top-10 finish in seven games. UND was 0-5 on the road, a stretch that included road losses to unranked Youngstown State and Indiana State.

Fruechte will serve as interim head coach while the national search for UND’s next head coach takes place.

Schweigert, Fruechte and UND athletic director Bill Chaves plan to hold a news conference Monday at 1 p.m.
