“Jerod Mayo rightly regrets Bill Belichick reference after Patriots loss”

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has retracted a previous comment.

After the Patriots’ 25-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Mayo wryly referenced the franchise’s victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. This came when Mayo was asked if he was considering a timeout during Indianapolis’ 19-game drive or before the Colts’ game-winning two-point conversion.

“Absolutely, there was a thought,” Mayo said. “We also won a Super Bowl the other way around here. I thought it was best for the team to keep our timeouts.”

Bill Belichick chose not to call timeouts at the end of Super Bowl XLIX, including before Malcolm Butler’s interception. However, Mayo noting the historic game as if he were the one in Belichick’s headset didn’t go over well.

The first-year head coach came to this conclusion himself and expressed regret in his opinion.

“I shouldn’t have done that,” Mayo said while appearing on WEEI’s “Greg Hill Show” Monday morning. “You’re right. I probably shouldn’t have done it – when I said it, I was frustrated first and foremost. I should have taken a deep breath. I shouldn’t have said that. I shouldn’t have said it.”

Mayo’s admission is respectable in this case. Unfortunately for Mayo, the consistent reluctance to make public comments and the inconsistencies in his messaging suggest that this is unlikely to be the last time he finds himself in this position.
