National Weather Service forecasters expect the “snow rush” we’re seeing across northern Michigan and parts of the Upper Peninsula to continue this week.

Next up in the Bullseye? Traverse City and the greater Grand Traverse Bay area.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Antrim, Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties until 7 a.m. Tuesday. These include Traverse City and Mancelona.

The weather forecast calls for heavy lake snow in this region with accumulations of 6 to 12 inches. In some areas higher amounts are possible. This system will also experience gusty winds and snowfall of up to 3 inches per hour. This could lead to poor visibility and dangerous driving conditions on the roads, said National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists at the Gaylord office.

Speaking of Gaylord, this area was the first to see heavy snow on Thanksgiving Day. As of this morning, NWS staff had measured nearly 44 inches of snow in their office there.

What does the rest of this week look like? More snow for areas in the north.

“The ‘snowstorm’ continues to spread across northern Michigan later this week, with a clipper system bringing the potential for even more widespread travel impacts around midweek,” the NWS said. “As a result, the coldest air of the season so far and even more lake snow formed in the area at the end of the week.”
