Millennials are reviving “cheesy” Christmas decorations from the 90s

‘Tis the season for stickiness—and Millennials love it fa-la-la-la.

The Santa Clauses of the 1990s are reminiscent of the gaudy Christmas decorations of yore and revive the maximalist tree decorations with big red bows, baubles and flashing light bulbs.

But the Christmas throwback trend is eliciting mixed reactions from the often grinchy Generation Z, who are more accustomed to modest, aesthetically pleasing decorations rather than the flashy extravagance of yesteryear.

“Nostalgic ’90s Christmas decorations are coming back and I’m here for it,” gushed Miranda Renee, a married mother of three, while showing off her look-at-me tree on TikTok.

The magnificent evergreen tree — decorated with multi-colored fairy lights, over-the-top ornaments, and cut-out paper snowmen — served as the focal point of Renee’s living room, which was covered in kitschy tinsel and lights and included Christmas village statues and a plastic Santa Claus figurine.

“Someone came into my house and said, ‘This reminds me of my childhood,'” Renee captioned the post. “And that’s exactly what I wanted.”

However, not everyone is enthusiastic about the very cheerful and colorful decorations.

While Generation Z teens and twenty-somethings seem obsessed with ’90s and 2000s fads, like plush Y2K-era home furnishings and vintage digital cameras, Zoomers seem divided when it comes to the gingerbread ones Enjoy Christmas landscapes.

Dawn Hayward’s daughter was stunned by the strikingness of her ’90s-themed Christmas layout.

“Bro, what did you do,” the stunned teens asked in a viral video with over 4.9 million views. “It’s so extra.”

“This is so extravagant,” echoed an equally confused commenter.

“She won’t invite friends over,” another quipped. Others found the look too old-fashioned.

But no matter how hard they try to combat the indiscretion movement, the gaudy sheen of ’90s trappings is likely here to stay, thanks to digital tastemakers who have a penchant for the whole thing.

“This year our Christmas theme is going bold, colorful, ’90s, kitschy, sexy,” mom Maisie Isabella announced in a clip from her celebration.

“You can’t look at this and then be sad,” she said as she admired her overloaded tree.

Erica Sally, a married mother, also followed a spectacular example, racking up over 1.8 million views for footage of her pre-millennium spunk.

“My husband wanted a Christmas tree that would remind him of his childhood,” she said. “So I decorated our tree with a ’90s theme.”

Lori Watton, a sports presenter from Northern Ireland, expressed these sentiments in her own flashy style.

“The only thing I’ve ever been too early for was the return of the cheesy ’90s lights this year,” she gushed. “And I love it.”
