The Patriots are starting a promising rookie offensive lineman at a new position

FOXBOROUGH – Layden Robinson came to the Patriots with a lot of experience.

At Texas A&M, he was a three-year starter at right guard. He arrived in New England as a fourth-round pick after playing 2,118 snaps at the position in college. Next Sunday, however, Robinson stepped out of his comfort zone for the first time in his football career when he started at left guard in the Patriots’ game against the Indianapolis Colts.

“I only played left guard a few times in college — a few reps just to get a few extra reps — and in minicamp as well,” Robinson said this week. “That was the only time I touched the left defense before I switched strictly to the right side. So this is really the first time.”

The Patriots toyed with the idea of playing Robinson at left guard earlier this offseason. He played 20 snaps at the position in the Patriots’ season opener against Carolina. However, the team then moved him back to his natural position as a right-back.

Robinson finished training camp as a right guard and played a total of 89 snaps at that position in three preseason games. This season, Robinson started six of eight games played. He is scheduled to play 288 snaps on the right side, including one as a tight end tackle.

In practice, Robinson completed most of his reps in his natural spot, but that changed weeks ago when Michael Jordan struggled. The veteran left guard was once one of the Patriots’ most consistent offensive linemen, but his play declined. Jordan was released last week before re-signing with the Patriots’ practice squad.

With Jordan struggling, the Patriots coaching staff began using Robinson as a left guard in practice.

“I think it’s going pretty well,” Robinson said. “It’s just a matter of working at it every day. It’s something new. Something I’m not used to. It’s just about working on it every day and getting better.”

The Patriots selected Robinson at right guard and people in the building believe he can be a good player in the NFL. However, the team’s plans changed when Michael Onwenu moved from right tackle to right guard. With Onwenu looking like the Patriots’ best offensive lineman, the team needs to figure out where Robinson belongs.

If the rookie excels, he could be the Patriots’ answer at left guard for the foreseeable future. Robinson admits it won’t be easy and likened the move from right guard to left guard to trying to write with the other hand.

“That’s the way it is. It’s very different,” Robinson said. “It’s not about just going here and understanding it. It’s like you’re now rewiring your entire system to get used to this side. It’s different.

“Everything new has its challenges, but I firmly believe that God can’t give you much more than you can handle. I just accept the challenge and face it head on.”
