Iowa State men fall one spot in new basketball rankings after top-5 loss

Kansas held off Auburn for the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll on Monday, as Southeastern Conference teams clinched three of the top four spots and two-time reigning national champion UConn came close after going 0-3 completely eliminated week at the Maui Invitational. The Jayhawks received 35 of 61 first-place votes in the poll, while the Tigers got the remaining 26 and climbed two spots to No. 2 after winning the Maui title. The Huskies fell as low as No. 25, barely managing to become the second team in nearly four decades to slip from No. 2 to No. 1 in a week. It was part of a whirlwind week of tournaments over the holiday week, which resulted in six new teams joining the rankings. Auburn was joined by fellow SEC schools No. 3 Tennessee and No. 4 Kentucky, with each team moving up four spots. Marquette was next at No. 5, followed by Iowa State, Gonzaga, Purdue, Duke and Alabama rounding out the top 10. Iowa State followed the loss to Auburn with back-to-back wins against Dayton and Colorado to finish fifth in Maui.
