Live updates: Biden pardon, Trump tariffs, Kash Patel and more presidential transition news

Kash Patel speaks during a Turning Point Action “United for Change” campaign rally for Donald Trump on October 24 in Las Vegas.

President-elect Donald Trump has been wavering in recent days between two candidates to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray: Kash Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, sources told CNN.

Trump had long earmarked Patel for a senior position in national intelligence or the Justice Department, but some people close to Trump, including those working on his transition, had argued that the controversy likely to surround Patel’s confirmation process may have weighed him down Senate would have made him more suitable for deputy director of the FBI than director.

But those closest to Trump, including his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump and his new deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, encouraged the president-elect to choose Patel, saying he was the only choice to properly fill the office Trump himself sees this as a bias against him.

Earlier this month, Trump interviewed both Bailey and Patel at his Mar-a-Lago home and spoke to them regularly by phone as he weighed his decision. But Trump was unimpressed with Bailey during their in-person interview, the sources said, arguing that Bailey doesn’t fit the mold of the legal bulldog the president-elect wants at the helm of the FBI.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, some Trump confidants late last week believed it was a “fight” between Patel and Bailey over who the president-elect would vote for.

But some in Trump’s inner circle are not happy with either option, the source said, adding that a third unknown candidate likely would have emerged in the next week or two if Trump had not made a decision beforehand.

Patel in particular was not considered a consensus for the post, the source said, noting that it always depended on what Trump wanted and possibly the last person he spoke to on a given day.
