From Munising to Gaylord, photos show a massive Thanksgiving snowstorm in northern Michigan

GAYLORD, MI – A lake-effect snowstorm that lasted for days raged across northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula as thousands of drivers took to the roads for a risky drive over Thanksgiving weekend.

There were some stunning snowfall reports and even a record snowfall as communities worked to clear the large accumulation of snow.

Gaylord, home to two popular ski resorts and known as a home base for winter adventures, had a record day Friday when 24.8 inches of snow fell in one day.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this figure was well above the region’s all-time daily snowfall, which was 17 inches on March 9, 1942. Records have been kept for this area since 1940.

On Monday morning, the NWS reported that Gaylord had received 43.7 inches of snow since Thanksgiving morning and was still snowing.

Winter weather warnings were also in effect for parts of the Upper Peninsula through Monday morning.

Several area schools were closed Monday, including Munising Public Schools, where there were reportedly over a foot of snow. East of Munising, in McMillan, there were reports of 33 inches of snow.
