Winter storm warning for heavy lake snow late Monday

Heavy lake effect snow will cause travel issues late Monday and Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan from 10 a.m. Monday through 10 a.m. Tuesday. A WINTER STORM WARNING is also in effect for St. Joseph County, Indiana from 3:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is also in effect for Elkhart and LaPorte counties in Indiana and St. Joseph County in Michigan from 3:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

It will start to snow lightly on Monday, but it will become heavier in the afternoon.

A band of very heavy snow will form overnight, stretching from southwest Michigan to across the state line.

This strong band will likely fluctuate Monday night into early Tuesday morning, producing heavy snow in places. Some parts of Berrien and Cass counties could see 8 inches or more of snowfall by Tuesday morning, while most parts could see 4 to 6 inches of snowfall.

There should not be as much snow in areas further south.

Tuesday morning commutes are likely to be affected as roads become snow-covered and slick.

The snowfall will taper off late Tuesday morning, leaving behind cold air. Highs will be near freezing on Tuesday.

More lake effect snow is possible by the end of the week after a system brings a mix of rain and snow mid-week.
