US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens as his ambassador to Great Britain.

Mr. Trump made the announcement in a post on social media in which he described him as “one of the most successful businessmen in the country.”

According to the company’s website, Mr. Stephens is chairman, president and CEO of Stephens Inc, a private financial services company headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mr Trump said his choice as ambassador had “built a wonderful financial services company while selflessly giving back to his community as a philanthropist”.

He added: “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full-time. “I am pleased that he will now have this opportunity as a top diplomat, representing the United States to one of America’s most valued and beloved allies.”

Mr. Stephens is a longtime Republican donor who has reportedly donated to conservative groups that opposed Trump in 2016 but then supported him in the 2020 and 2024 elections.

He was also reportedly a top fundraiser for Republican Party presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the 2012 US elections, known as a “bundler.”

The Senate must confirm Mr. Stephens as a candidate for ambassador to the United Kingdom.
