NBC4 Washington says host Leon Harris, 63, is resigning after a terrible broadcast

NBC4 Washington acknowledged Monday that veteran anchor Leon Harris appeared “uncomfortable” as he struggled through a news segment last week – while also announcing he was “stepping down” for health reasons.

The popular broadcaster raised eyebrows on Thanksgiving when he stumbled over his words and hesitated awkwardly at times while delivering local news.

Shortly after the hard-to-watch appearance, NBC4 meteorologist Ryan Miller claimed that Harris, 63, who formerly worked for CNN, was “doing well” in response to calls to the network from concerned fans.

On Monday, the station changed its approach to updating viewership numbers.

“Last week, Leon (Harris) didn’t seem to be doing well while anchoring News4’s 6am. Leon will step away from the anchor desk to focus on health issues,” NBC4 said in a statement.

“We here at NBC4 – and you at home – care deeply about Leon and wish him well. We thank you for your concern.”

It is unclear what health issues Harris has and if and when he might return. An NBC spokesman declined further comment Monday evening.

The presenter quickly received an outpouring of support on social media from viewers who hoped he would get back on his feet soon.

“Sending Mr. Harris nothing but love, thoughts and prayers,” podcaster Lee Sanders wrote. “Whatever’s going on, kick his ass and come back stronger than before, bro!”

“Quite a mysterious announcement here, but I wish Harris well,” tweeted retired Washington Post editor Robert McCartney.

Harris, who has been with the local affiliate since 2017, spoke about his issues with alcohol back in March 2022 after he was sentenced to 10 days in jail for crashing into another car while driving under the influence.

Due to his legal issues, he was taken off the air for a period of time.

“I know I let so many people down,” said Harris, who blamed “alcohol and this disease” for his poor decision.

The broadcaster said he did “three hours of therapy” every morning in his free time to confront his drug use.

“To all the people I’ve let down and disappointed, I first say, ‘I can’t tell you how sorry I am,'” he said. “But I will try to show you that I deserve the chance to regain your trust and respect.”

Earlier this fall, Harris required surgery after suffering a serious foot injury that also sidelined him.

“I wish I had a really, really good story, I wish I was saving a baby from a burning building or something like that, but unfortunately that’s not the case,” he said in a video shared by the station.

“Your buddy here did something pretty stupid. My advice to you is, whatever you do, don’t walk up and down the stairs in socks.”
