Celtics shake off rare defeats and defeat Heat

Jaylen Brown finished the game with 29 points and seven rebounds and Payton Pritchard came off the bench to score 25 points, his fourth straight game with 20 or more.

Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis did not sit out, Jrue Holiday was sidelined due to knee pain and Sam Hauser was out for personal reasons. The Heat were missing Jimmy Butler (knee), Nikola Jovic (ankle), Josh Richardson (illness) and Kevin Love (back). Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr. each scored 19 points to lead Miami, making just 7 of 34 3-point shots.

The Heat took a 7-0 lead after the first 100 seconds of the game, but that’s where their good vibes were largely dampened. Miami made many open 3-point shots in the first half and missed most of them, a fateful result against a team as offensively potent as Boston.

The Celtics missed their first four 3-pointers and bounced back with a 17-2 burst that consisted entirely of 2-pointers and free throws until Tatum finished it off with a long ball. Luke Kornet led the way with three baskets.

Joe Mazzulla took advantage of the lack of personnel by giving almost everyone a chance in the first half. The Celtics coach usually uses two or three substitutes at the first timeout, but this time he opted for a group of four that included Pritchard, Drew Peterson, Xavier Tillman and Neemias Queta.

Pritchard took over the game shortly after checking in, continuing a recent trend. Over a short period of time, he hit a deep three-point shot, reset his defender, scored inside and quickly saved a ball that flew out of bounds before firing it to Peterson, who made two free throws.

The second quarter brought more of the same for Pritchard. He hit another 3-pointer, converted a layup, and with 6:23 left, rolled off a screen, caught an inbounds pass from Tatum and hit his fourth three-pointer of the half, making it 48- 35 lead.

After starting the game 0-for-4 from distance, the Celtics shot 9 of 16, bringing some normality back to their offense.

Miami made just 3 of 18 3-point shots in the first half and went into halftime trailing 60-45.

The start of the third quarter was chaos for the Celtics. They turned the ball over on their first four possessions, with Tatum responsible for three of the fumbles. A 3-pointer from Haywood Highsmith from the right corner capped the quick 7-0 Heat burst and brought them within 60-52.

But Mazzulla called a timeout and the Celtics responded with a quick 8 points, including Tatum hitting a 3-pointer during the frenzy and clapping his hands together in an “it was about time” sort of way. The revenue issue resurfaced later in the period but was not a factor. The Celtics scored nine goals during the quarter and outscored the Heat by seven anyway, an almost unimaginable result.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Derrick White, returning from a walk-related absence, extended Boston’s lead to 91-67 early in the fourth period and nearly shut out Miami.
