Police reveal unexpected twist in the case of missing Hawaii woman Hannah Kobayashi

Police announced a surprising discovery Monday in connection with the disappearance of missing Hawaiian Hannah Kobayashi, who vanished after landing at LAX airport last month.

Investigators have been searching for Hannah Kobayashi since November 11th. She was unable to board a flight from LAX to New York days earlier, on November 8th. Her family and friends were also actively involved in the search while dealing with the tragic suicide of Kobayashi’s father, Ryan, near LAX on November 24th after traveling from Hawaii to Los Angeles to take part in the search .

Although friends have described text messages received from Kobayashi since her disappearance as atypical, Los Angeles police confirmed Monday that the 30-year-old crossed the U.S. border into Mexico on foot. LAPD Police Chief Jim McDonnell said video footage of Kobayashi from U.S. Border and Customs Protection “clearly” showed she made the move on Sunday.

The family has been made aware, McDonnell added. “She was alone with her luggage and appeared to be uninjured.”

The evidence suggests the case is now classified as a “voluntary missing person.”

Video evidence clearly shows that Kobayashi remained unharmed at LAX after the flight from Maui, McDonnell said, but gave no indication as to why she strayed from her path.

Instead, he presented a timeline of evidence showing that Kobayashi was hanging around Los Angeles for three days from November 8th to 11th. On November 11, she picked up her luggage from a baggage carousel at LAX.

“To date, the investigation has found no evidence that Kobayashi is a victim of human trafficking or the victim of a crime,” McDonnell said, adding that she is also not suspected of any criminal activity.

Before leaving Maui, investigators say she expressed a desire to say goodbye to modern technology and connectivity.

Police have urged Kobayashi to contact law enforcement, her family or the U.S. Embassy “to let us know she is safe.”
