Bo Nix and Jameis Winston are bringing the Jefferson County Air Show to the NFL

With 10:01 left to play in the third quarter of Monday night’s Week 13 NFL game, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix fired a long throw to wide receiver Marvin Mims, which resulted in a 93-yard touchdown pass led.

On the next play from scrimmage, Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston launched a 70-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

Welcome to the Jefferson County Airshow – 795 yards of passing moved from Alabama’s high school fields to Empower Field at Mile High in Denver – ending in a 41-32 Broncos victory.

A former quarterback at Pinson Valley High School, Nix completed 18 of 35 passes for 298 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

A former Hueytown High School quarterback, Winston completed 34 of 58 passes for 497 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Broncos’ second interception off Winston was returned 44 yards for a touchdown by cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, extending Denver’s lead to nine points with 1:48 to play.

The Broncos’ first interception was also a pick-six, with outside linebacker Nic Bonitto traveling 71 yards for a touchdown that gave Denver a 21-10 lead with 1:38 left in the first half.

“In a game like this, it literally comes down to who can score more points no matter how it happens,” Nix said.

After the first pick-six, Winston pushed Cleveland down the field for his second touchdown pass of the game to tight end David Njoku, cutting Denver’s lead to four points with 13 seconds left in the first half.

But the second pick-six was followed by the Broncos’ third interception – in the end zone with 34 seconds to play and Cleveland at Denver’s 2-yard line.

“It’s hard for any team to win when their quarterback has given them two defensive touchdowns,” Winston said. “The defense played well; The offense played well. I didn’t do a good job. …

“I know I’m better than this. I just pray that the Lord delivers me from pick-sixes. That’s not me. Phenomenal game offensive. Do some great things. But I messed up.”

In his fifth 400-yard game, Winston broke the Cleveland single-game record for passing yards – 457 set by Josh McCown on October 11, 2015, in a 33-30 overtime win against the Baltimore Ravens.

Winston’s 497 passing yards are the 27th-most in a game in NFL history and the second-most for a high school or college passer in Alabama. Former Athens High School star Philip Rivers threw for 503 yards in the San Diego Chargers’ 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on October 18, 2015.

In the Broncos’ 65th season, only one player had more passing yards against Denver than Winston on Monday night.

“It doesn’t matter,” Winston said. “It’s about finishing. It’s about taking action when your team needs you most.”

That’s what Nix had to do when Winston moved the Browns 72 yards after the Denver QB’s second interception of the game. Winston’s fourth TD pass – a 5-yarder to running back Nick Chubb – came with 8:57 left as Cleveland took a 32-31 lead.

The Broncos went from 30 to 9 of the Browns in 10 plays, with Nix completing 5 of 6 passes for 52 yards and rushing for 6 more yards before Wil Lutz kicked a 27-yard field goal to put Denver back in by 2 To take the lead: 54 left.
