Firefighters battle the house fire on Oak Drive early Sunday morning

Emergency crews from three fire departments responded to a house fire on Oak Drive, north of Bourbon Street Pizza, early Sunday morning.

Plymouth Deputy Fire Chief Chuy Garcia told WTCA that the fire started in the northeast corner of the home in a small room that appeared to be accessible only from the outside. When Plymouth firefighters arrived there was smoke inside the home and the fire was spreading through the roof on the northeast corner. When firefighters entered the room, it was completely gutted and the fire had spread to the attic, which is open across the house.

To prevent the fire from spreading throughout the house, firefighters cut a trench in the roof in the middle of the house.

The northern half of the house has significant damage and the southern half has some smoke damage, but the contents were saved.

Plymouth firefighters were assisted by the LaPaz and Argos fire departments. They were on scene for nearly three hours and Oak Drive was closed to traffic while crews battled the fire amid single-digit wind chills.

The mother and children were at home at the time of the fire but were able to evacuate safely. Most of the animals were also able to get out. It is believed some animals were hiding in other rooms of the house, but firefighters found no deceased animals.

Nothing suspicious was found during the cleanup and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
