Monterrey Airport is close to the cargo terminal

The Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMA), responsible for the operation of this airport, has increased the results achieved in the last trimesters. According to the financier, OMA noted that in the second trimester of this year, the shares of the OMA segment increased by 34.9%. This is primarily due to the expansion of air and land cargo activities in Monterrey and has been consolidated at the airport into a central operations center for national and international companies.

For the third trimester of 2024, OMA reported a continuation of this positive trend with a 31.6% increase in cargo segment growth, indicating that the growth in operations was not observed alone, as was the market development in Monterrey and other airports. Today, Monterrey Airport is registered with 7,434.3 tons of transport capacity with a volume of 13.3% and a transport volume of 13.3% in October.

Monterrey Airport’s strategic location in the heart of the Nuevo León industrial region was a key factor in its outcome. Nuevo León has been eliminated in recent years as one of the most attractive destinations for the Inversión Extranjera Directa (IED), with an inflow of 2,304 million dollars during the first half of 2024, followed by the Economic Secretariat. This reversal has fueled the expansion of the company’s manufacturing and logistics sectors as it has benefited from airports and cargo terminals.

“Monterrey Airport was an experiment and resulted in a significant activity that contributed to the dynamism in the north of the country,” said Fernando Gómez Suárez, air sector analyst.

With a strong commitment to the automotive industry, the company produced 12.5% of automotive parts in Mexico, from Coahuila and Guanajuato alone. This industrial dynamic was translated into a large demand for logistics services, which Monterrey Airport took over. The airport’s infrastructure, which includes two taxable entities (one air and one land), ensures a competitive advantage over other airports in the country.

Competence with other airports, such as Felipe Ángeles, has found a topic for debate among experts. When AIFA entered the national-level cargo airports, this increase was largely achieved through the reassignment of cargo operations at Mexico City Airport in Santa Lucia, a decision made by federal authorities.

Gómez Suárez, who lived at the exit of the Monterrey airport, was organic and had to address the strategic location of the region, as well as the growing industry in the north of the country. “Together with the companies created in Nuevo León and their employees that need a logistics station to transport commercial products in Nuevo León, throughout the north of the country, this is a clear indication of their consolidated industry in this region” , señala en entrevista con Extension.

In this context, national airports have not recognized the potential of Monterrey Airport. International airlines, such as Lufthansa, also came to this terminal and registered on paper as in a key center for cargo transport. In June this year, Lufthansa opened a new freight route between AIFA, Monterrey and Frankfurt.

The strong enthusiasm of Nuevo León has consolidated its position as an important industrial and logistics center, having favored the Monterrey airport in commercial movement and also establishing itself at the port of Altamira and in Tamaulipas. Enrique de Hita Sánchez, President of the Multimodal Altamira company, has determined the dynamism it has generated in the region’s logistics, adopting a key option for traders coming abroad and heading north as a destination.

“Monterrey is a center in constant growth, just like the cargo at their airport. “It is all the more important that the people of Monterrey chose Altamira on the natural harbor of Houston, because they have a mandate to come to Monterrey from a Provence in the city center of Altamira and sell them from Altamira.” Extension.

Monterrey Airport has allowed a continuous expansion of its services due to its infrastructure and geographical location. Among the airport authorities, the new infrastructure changes, the increase in flight and cargo capacities and the need to support the progress ritual in the logistics sector. This intention was transferred to a significant extent to the airport’s cargo capacity, as it came together as one of the most important players in the sector.
