The Jaguars’ “Play Surrounding Lawrence” sparks massive debate in the NFL

The Jacksonville Jaguars nearly overcame a double-digit deficit against the Houston Texans on Sunday. While the fourth quarter got interesting as it progressed, the game was highlighted by a late hit from a Texas defender who slid to the floor.

Some believe the hit was dirty; others believe Lawrence began his push too late. Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokon made it clear where he stands on the issue. He believes the attack was dirty.

“I understand being aggressive,” Oluokon said. “I understand that when he runs he has to make sure he doesn’t get the first down. He slipped. He slipped and you fell to the ground. If he didn’t slip, he would go into the depths. Attacking a quarterback like that is just weird anyway. He’s a quarterback, he’s not going to – you’re going to get him up and running his feet, driving him back. Instead, he was seen slipping, and after he slipped, he basically fell to the ground.

“As far as mindset goes, I understand that mindset. I don’t understand the ending of the piece. I’m not trying to put pressure on him, but as a defender I understand the game in defense, the attitude we have when we try to attack and make a tackle. But he did. He slipped quite a bit – you understand that you messed up. He understands that he messed up.”

The Jaguars responded well to Lawrence’s scary attitude. Still, the damage was done as he will likely be out for the remainder of the season.

Oluokon noted that players on both sides of the ball have a difficult task. The ball carrier must time his movement correctly and the defender must try not to hit the ball carrier too high or too low.

Lawrence’s injury also contributes to the need for defenders to make this decision on the fly. The play on which Lawrence was injured sparked league-wide discussion on the topic.

“I can speak from both sides,” Oluokon said. “As a defensive player, he goes for the first down. I can see you running and giving maximum effort, but just the way he approached the actual tackling part. Trevor slipped, as we all know quarterbacks slip, and it was – he slipped. So anyway, you dig deep and ask yourself, “What did you want to accomplish?”

“And then you did that – it was a dirty game. I won’t say he’s a dirty person, but it was a dirty game. He knows better. I think in his head he knows he shouldn’t have done it. “As a defender, I understand that he is aggressive and wants to make every play. Of course I understand this attitude, especially today, and there is no place for it in the Play right now.
