The Red Sox have agreed to a one-year contract with seven-time All-Star Aroldis Chapman, an industry source told MassLive on Tuesday. It is reportedly worth $10.75 million in 2025 and is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Chapman posted a picture of himself wearing a Red Sox cap on Instagram, confirming the signing.

Best known for his seven seasons with the Yankees, Chapman is a seven-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion who made 68 appearances for the Pirates last year, posting a 3.79 ERA in 61 ⅔ innings . As has been the case throughout his career, Chapman posted a high strikeout rate (14.3 K/9) but also walked 5.7 batters per nine innings. His fastball velocity was still among the best in baseball, averaging 98.7 mph.

Since signing a five-year, $86 million contract with the Yankees in 2022, Chapman has pitched for three teams, splitting time between the Royals and Rangers in 2023 (and winning a title) before signing with Pittsburgh for 2024 . He’s no longer with the Yankees Level of dominance: He was in his prime, but he’s still missing a lot of at-bats. A year ago, he held hitters to a .165 expected batting average. Red Sox manager Alex Cora has wanted to bring more speed to Boston’s bullpen for years, and Chapman, one of the hardest pitchers of all time, fits the bill.

Chapman has lasted more than 30 games in eight seasons, but only 20 in the last two years, so it’s not certain the Red Sox view him as their best ninth-inning option. With Kenley Jansen out in free agency, the Red Sox need a new closer and Chapman joins internal options Justin Slaten and Liam Hendriks. Slaten, Hendriks, Chapman and Wilson appear to form the core of a new-look Boston bullpen with Garrett Whitlock, Luis Guerrero, Zack Kelly, Greg Weissert, Brennan Bernardino, Josh Winckowski and others.

The addition of Chapman does not come without controversy. The Cuban native was suspended 30 games by Major League Baseball in 2016 for violating the league’s domestic violence policy after he was accused of pushing his girlfriend with his hands around hers during an incident at his home in 2016 neck, choking her and firing several shots in Florida last October. No charges were filed.
