Eminem’s mother died at the age of 69 after a battle with lung cancer

According to a report, Eminem’s mother Debbie Nelson has died due to complications from lung cancer. She was 69.

Nelson died Monday evening in St. Joseph, Missouri, just months after her diagnosis was announced to the public, TMZ reported. In September, a source told InTouch Weekly that she was “terminally ill with advanced lung cancer” and that her famous son had not yet visited her at the time.

“There aren’t many options (for Debbie),” the source added. “She is currently living between the cancer center and with family members. She has very little time (left).”

The rapper, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, hasn’t shied away from discussing his difficult relationship with his mother over the years. In his 1999 track “My Name Is,” Eminem claimed that Nelson “does more dope than me.” He also apparently called her out on abuse and neglect in his 2002 song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”

Nelson, who is also the mother of Nathan Samra-Mathers, then sued her son for defamation. Although a judge ruled in her favor, she was only awarded $25,000 of the $11 million she sought, ABC News reported. Additionally, the majority of the settlement – $23,354.25 – went toward legal fees, leaving Nelson with around $1,600.

Nearly a decade later, speaking to the Village Voice, Nelson said she would consider forgiving her son and continuing their relationship.

“There is hope for everyone,” she said at the time. “Basically it’s about swallowing your pride. It’s like a cashed check. It’s over, it’s done. You have to keep going.”

In 2013, Eminem sparked rumors of a reconciliation with his mother with the release of his track “Headlights.” In it he says: “And I’m angry that I didn’t have the opportunity to thank you for being my mother and father.” He later adds: “So, mom, please accept this as a tribute that I wrote on that jet.”

Nelson was born in 1955 on a military base in Kansas, where she lived with her “large, dysfunctional family,” according to her 2008 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. She was only 16 when she married Eminem’s father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., and two years later the rapper was born.

The Grammy winner’s estranged father died in 2019 at the age of 67.
