LOS ANGELES – Eagles veteran defensive lineman Brandon Graham will miss the rest of the season, he told reporters Sunday night, after tearing his left triceps in Philadelphia’s 37-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s possible that Graham, a Philadelphia icon and author of the greatest play in franchise history – a strip sack of Tom Brady in Super Bowl LII that gave the Eagles their only Lombardi Trophy – has played his final NFL snap .

He said before the season began that his 15th year would be his last. Despite already playing at a high level at age 36, he has left the door open for a return, but that’s no guarantee.

“I’m just trying to process everything. I haven’t gotten that far yet,” Graham said. “But you know what, I’m going to keep my spirits up and continue to enjoy it… because we have a special team right now and it’s time for people to step up.”

“I’m glad we’ve come this far. And if anything, if I were to retire, I would be happy with the way I played today. And I couldn’t ask for anything else.”

Graham had a big impact in Sunday’s win with a sack, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits. He left in the fourth quarter after taking a hit to the elbow from running back Kyren Williams while rushing from the left edge on a pass play.

Graham initially thought it was just a flare-up of tendonitis in his elbow, but when he was examined by trainers on the sidelines, he knew something was wrong.

“(The coach) told me and I just tried to process it. I called my wife and told her the news. The children were crying,” he said. “But at the end of the day it is what it is. There’s no point in crying about it. I just learned that I gave it my all, it hurt, but I’m telling you, I’ll get better from it.”

As the news broke on the Eagles sideline, quarterback Jalen Hurts walked up to Graham, put his arm around him and spoke to him at length.

“That I was there for him,” Hurts said of the message he delivered. “First and foremost it is very unfortunate for the man and then for a teammate. A guy who has made himself popular in this franchise has always tried to motivate and really teach the younger guys coming in. … His goal was to do his best. “But he really needs to be the best teammate he can be and serve everyone he can.”

Other teammates hugged Graham or patted him on the shoulder as he walked in. As the Eagles celebrated their seventh straight win and moved to 9-2, Graham’s loss was clearly the main topic of conversation among his teammates.

“I only got to be his teammate for a short time, but I feel like I’ve known him my whole life,” said Saquon Barkley, who set a career-high with more than 300 scrimmage yards on Sunday. “He’s the reason this transition was so easy for me – him and a lot of other people.”

“With the energy and passion he brings not only to this team but to this city, he embodies what it means to be a Philadelphia Eagle. And we all have to line up and try to pursue and accomplish the things he does.”

With his sack on Sunday, Graham moved into third place on the Eagles’ all-time sack list (76.5), behind only Reggie White (124) and Trent Cole (88.5). He holds the record for most regular season games (206) in Eagles history.

The Eagles are shorthanded at the edge rusher position. Bryce Huff, one of the team’s big free agent additions, is on injured reserve following wrist surgery but is expected to return toward the end of the regular season. Meanwhile, the majority of responsibility falls to Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith and rookie Jalyx Hunt.

Philadelphia also left cornerback Darius Slay early in the third quarter with a concussion after suffering a hard collision while making a tackle on tight end Colby Parkinson down the right sideline.

Slay was replaced in the lineup by Isaiah Rodgers, who was flagged for pass interference in the end zone later in the drive for a Rams score.

Slay, a six-time Pro Bowler, is in his 12th NFL season. He has seven passes defensed and one forced fumble this year, and the Eagles had the second-best pass defense in the league (173 yards per game).
