A harmless asteroid was discovered on a collision course with Earth on Tuesday

A completely harmless and tiny asteroid was discovered early Tuesday morning on a collision course with Earth.

According to the European Space Agency, the asteroid, measuring about 27 inches wide, was discovered by astronomers at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona.

The asteroid was expected to impact Earth’s atmosphere around 11:15 a.m. ET this morning.

In a social media post, the European Space Agency said the asteroid was a completely harmless event and was even expected to produce a “beautiful fireball in the sky over northern Siberia.”

According to physicist Richard Moissl, this is the fourth time this year that an asteroid has been classified as an “imminent impactor.” According to Space.com, another asteroid was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Hawaii back in October. The asteroid was discovered over Hawaii two hours before it burned up over the Pacific Ocean.

What is an impending impactor?
