According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, infielder Hyeseong Kim of the KBO League’s Kiwoom Heroes is expected to be called in around noon ET on Wednesday.

This release begins a 30-day window for the 25-year-old to sign with an MLB team this offseason, Morosi added. He previously reported on the Seattle Mariners’ interest in Kim on November 6th.

The Mariners, who are known to be in the 2B market, are among the teams that have taken a close look at infielder Hye-seong Kim, who the Kiwoom Heroes will draft this offseason.
Kim, a left-handed hitter, had an .841 OPS and 30 SB in KBO this season at age 25.@MLBNetwork @SeattleSports

The second baseman hit .326 (.841 OPS) with 11 homers, 75 RBI and 90 runs in 127 games for Kiwoom last season.

The Mariners need offensive help, especially in the infield. Last year’s team stalled in the playoffs before falling late and winning 85 games. Seattle hit just .224 as a team and ranked 10th in the American League in runs scored (676).

Kim could be a big help to a team that consistently struggled on offense last year. The M’s attempted to bolster their offense at the deadline by adding Randy Arozarena, Victor Robles and Justin Turner. But Seattle remained one game shy of the AL Wild Card and three wins shy of the AL West title.

So it’s back to the drawing board for a Seattle team that has been competitive lately but hasn’t found a way to build a deep playpff run.

Seattle has won between 85 and 90 games over the past four seasons, but has only made one postseason appearance. This happened in 2022, when Seattle defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 in the American League Wild Card Series before falling 3-0 to the Houston Astros in the AL Division Series.

Perhaps Kim could be an answer for an infield that desperately needs more offensive production. But of course he will also have interest from other teams.

Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors provided his insight on November 26th.

“The Mariners have already been linked to Kim, and he should draw significant interest from other teams once his free agency begins in earnest,” Adams wrote. “The A’s, Royals, Pirates, Braves, Yankees and Brewers make varying degrees of sense as speculative matchups.”

Ultimately, Kim will be an interesting name to keep an eye on this month as infield-reliant teams vie for his services.
