Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off for the first time in his 866-game career on Tuesday after being shown a red card for a last-man foul on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

The 38-year-old stormed out of the penalty area in typical fashion 18 minutes before the DFB Cup round of 16 and took out an advancing Frimpong.

Neuer was immediately shown red and brought Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz into play on his Bayern debut. After leaving the field, he was seen apologizing to coach Vincent Kompany.

The Bayern captain received a yellow card 23 times throughout his career. All featured at club level, with the 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper never being booked during his 124-cap career.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann described the sending off during half-time as a speaker for ARD as “undeniable” and added: “The understanding of space has always been Manu’s strength, but here it might have been better to wait.”

The game between the 20-time winners and the current defending champions Leverkusen was particularly exciting as referee Harm Osmers handed out three yellow cards in the first 22 minutes in addition to Neuer’s red.

Although he played for Israel at international level, Tuesday’s game was Peretz’s first game for Bayern after joining the club in the summer of 2023.
