Many Americans spend Thanksgiving with their loved ones over a home-cooked meal.

But some may also remember standing in line on Thanksgiving evening to snag Black Friday deals and discounts. However, this changed in 2020 when many stores decided to remain closed to limit crowds during the pandemic and extend the holiday shopping season.

Since then, a new tradition seems to have begun, and this year many retailers remain closed. But for those wondering whether they’ll be able to run to the grocery store or send mail on Turkey Day, here’s what’s open and closed on Thursday, November 28th.

For the fifth year in a row, Target stores will be closed on Thanksgiving.

“When I heard from team members how much they valued time with their families, it was an easy decision for me to make the policy permanent, and our store teams have had this time off ever since,” CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement last year.

Walmart and Best Buy retail stores will also close.

You have to wait to shop in department stores. Macy’s, Nordstrom and Kohl’s will remain closed on Thanksgiving and reopen on Black Friday.

Kroger’s hours vary, but most stores close early on Thanksgiving. Most Albertsons Companies stores – Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Vons and Tom Thumb – will be open, but with adjusted hours.

Whole Foods is open with modified hours.

Trader Joe’s and Aldi remain closed. Sam’s Club and Costco warehouses also will not be open Thursday.

Be sure to check with your local grocery store for exact hours.

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so federal offices, courts and post offices will be closed. Other government institutions – such as the DMV and libraries – will also be closed.

Thanksgiving is a holiday. The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange are not traded. Most bank branches will close, but online banking and ATMs will remain available.

Don’t expect any packages on Thanksgiving Day. The US Postal Service is closing. All UPS and FedEx services will be closed except UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical. Limited UPS locations will be open.
