College Football Playoff Rankings: Updated 12-team rankings revealed in fourth 2024 CFP poll

College Football Playoff Rankings: Updated 12-team rankings revealed in fourth 2024 CFP poll

It’s rivalry week in college football – and there’s a lot of playoff implications at stake.

With only a handful of games left for each program, the race for the College Football Playoff is on. Teams have few chances left to improve their resumes and prove they can compete with a chance at a national championship.

With the expansion from four to twelve teams from 2024, the end of the season will be even more exciting. Teams that may have been well outside the hunt for a national championship in previous years are in the midst of tough competition for one of the 12 playoff spots.

The four-team system existed since 2012 and replaced the outdated BCS format. This expanded the championship series from two teams to four, leaving fans wondering when it would expand again. The answer was ultimately 2024.

The first release of the College Football Playoff rankings began in early November. There will be six reveals in total before the final 12-team playoffs are selected in January. On Tuesday, November 26th, this ranking will be published for the fourth time.

2024 College Football Playoff Rankings

Who are the top 12 teams in the latest CFP bracket poll?

rank team Record
1. Oregon 11-0
2. Ohio State 10-1
3. Texas 10-1
4. Penn State 10-1
5. Notre Dame 10-1
6. Miami 10-1
7. Georgia 9-2
8. Tennessee 9-2
9. SMU 10-1
10. Indiana 10-1
11. Boise State 10-1
12. Clemson* 9-2

*Despite being ranked No. 12, Clemson is expected to miss the 12-team field in favor of No. 16 Arizona State, which is the projected Big 12 champion and fifth-seeded conference champion.

Tennessee is the biggest beneficiary this week as the Volunteers are in a good position to make the field as long as they beat Vanderbilt. SMU and Miami continue to rise in the rankings as the two likely ACC Championship Game participants continue to make their case as overall prospects.

Despite the loss to Ohio State, Indiana remains the Big Ten team with a single loss and the lowest seed overall in the Top 12. Clemson has to lose to Miami to reach the ACC Championship Game, but the Tigers are doing well too strong as a whole team.

The first four teams are eliminated

rank team Record
13. Alabama 8-3
14. Ole Miss 8-3
15. South Carolina 8-3
16. Arizona State* 9-2

*NO. 16 Arizona State is expected to advance to the 12-team field as Big 12 champions

Alabama and Ole Miss’ losses over the weekend are proving costly as the two SEC teams are eliminated from the playoffs entirely. Meanwhile, the outcome of the Big 12 is unclear, and Arizona State makes the field despite not being ranked in the top 15.

As for South Carolina, the Gamecocks face Clemson this weekend and with a win they could remain as a three-loss team. This game is likely to be an eliminator game, where the loser’s season ends and the winner stays alive in the playoff discussion.

2024 College Football Playoff Round

Week 14 CFP bracket

Here’s how the new College Football Playoff format will work in 2024

The new CFP format consists of 12 teams. Automatic bids will be made to the top four conference champions, who will automatically be seeded 1-4 regardless of playoff rankings. The remaining eight spots include at least six overall contenders and then the top two ranked remaining conference champions.

So it could be seven overall offers and then another conference winner, or just eight overall offers. The CFP Committee will determine the exact division of the field. At least this new format guarantees that at least one Group 5 team will make the field.
