The Steelers should target the recently signed $9 million wide receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to exceed expectations in 2024 as the team is 9-3 and has been atop the AFC North for 13 weeks. Mike Tomlin’s team earned a decisive division victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13, securing the franchise’s 21st consecutive winning season.

Even though the Steelers are one of the best teams in the NFL, general manager Omar Khan should still make some moves to strengthen the roster before the playoffs. Pittsburgh has one of the deepest groups in football, but the wide receiver room could use another playmaker.

George Pickens has established himself as an adequate WR1 and Calvin Austin III has emerged since Russell Wilson took over as the starter in Week 7, but Mike Williams has rarely been used since he was traded from the New York Jets to the Steelers at the trade deadline , and the rest of the position group doesn’t inspire much confidence.

That’s why Pittsburgh should sign recently released wide receiver Josh Reynolds, who the Denver Broncos waived on Tuesday. Reynolds was scheduled to return from injured reserve a few weeks ago, and his 21-day practice window was set to expire on Wednesday. According to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, the Broncos instead decided to waive him and stick with their younger wide receivers.

Reynolds only appeared in five games in 2024 due to finger surgery on October 11. The veteran was also injured in a shooting in Denver in October while on IR. Reynolds suffered injuries to his head and left arm that police described as “non-life-threatening.” The 29-year-old has not spoken publicly about the incident.

Although Reynolds has missed a ton of time this season, the Steelers should sign the 2017 fourth-round pick for wide receiver depth if he clears waivers. Reynolds had arguably the best year of his career with the Detroit Lions in 2023. He recorded 40 receptions for 608 yards and five touchdowns and served as the team’s WR2 opposite Pro Bowler Amon-Ra St.Brown.

Reynolds isn’t an elite player, but the former Texas A&M star has been a solid receiver throughout his career and would be a smart midseason acquisition for Omar Khan.
