MLB Free Agency: Juan Soto “eliminates” teams from competition

According to comments Blake Snell made during his opening press conference with the Dodgers, Juan Soto and Scott Boras have begun eliminating teams from the field of potential suitors. The same reports indicate that the teams still in the running – reportedly the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and Blue Jays – all have bids in excess of $600 million and that the signing will take place before or at next week’s Winter Meetings will be done in Dallas for maximum exposure.

MLB.com put together a roundtable with insiders, including Mets’ beat reporter Anthony DiComo, to discuss the state of the Soto market, and while there isn’t a lot of hard news, there are a few things of note for Mets fans, with The big takeaway is that all insiders believe the Mets are either the frontrunners in this regard or at least on par with the Yankees.

All teams have selling points, from the Blue Jays’ alleged desire to be the highest bidder to the Red Sox’s deep Dominican roots and support from Sox luminaries like David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez to the Yankees’ proven track record and comfortable commitment the Mets to win every season. The Dodgers can never be counted out, but no one seems to think they have a good chance unless it’s a completely over-the-top offer that the other teams can’t match, considering Soto’s supposed preference in the East plays coast.

This is all vague and speculative, but it also makes sense. We know Boras likes to make a splash on the biggest stages, so a press conference at the Winter Meetings makes sense. Considering that a large portion of the free agent market will be waiting for Soto to get started, including many Boras clients, it’s up to everyone involved not to let this process drag on for too long.
