Can I sleep safely with a heating pad?

In general, yes. Although experts generally recommend keeping your bedroom cool, it’s different for everyone and it really comes down to personal preference. But on the whole it’s not necessarily like that harmfulsaid Dr. Harris.

However, she warned: “You have to pay attention to how your body reacts. If you overheat, it can affect your sleep cycles and disrupt the natural cooling process that your body relies on when resting.” (4) And when that happens, you may find yourself tossing and turning and unable to sleep to get a good night’s sleep.

But even experts sometimes throw out the rulebook: “It’s all about finding what works for you—whether it’s a warmer room, a specific pillow, or even a heating pad—while also incorporating sleep health tips,” says Dr. Harris. “A sleep environment that leaves you feeling relaxed and ready to fall asleep can sometimes be more effective than strictly following all the guidelines.” (4)

When it comes to sleeping with a heating pad, it’s best to use it in moderation. If you find yourself getting too hot at night, your best bet is to either turn down the heat or remove the heating pad entirely. If you are constantly too cold at night, you should consult your doctor to discuss what to do next.
