Gervonta Davis dismisses Shakur Stevenson controversy: ‘What did he do in sports?’

Gervonta “Tank” Davis dismissed rumors that he would face undefeated three-division champion Shakur Stevenson and that Stevenson posed a threat to his undefeated record.

“What did Shakur do?” That’s what Davis said to a group of reporters following his press conference Tuesday to promote his upcoming WBA lightweight championship fight with Lamont Roach on March 1 at a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“What did he do in sports? He didn’t do anything. The boys look better than him. Keyshawn (Davis) looks a lot better than (him). You keep calling his name but he hasn’t done anything. Keyshawn didn’t even do nothing. Why do you keep saying his name?”

One reporter suggested he might be afraid to face the skillful boxing Stevenson, who holds a record of 22-0 (10 KOs).

“Afraid of what?” Panzer shot back. “Afraid of what? It would have to be someone who hits and hurts – he is not offended. Everything is defense. Defense only wins basketball and football. That shit doesn’t win in boxing.” Davis, 30-0 (28 KOs), is one of the sport’s greatest punchers.

Of another rival, two-division champion Teofimo Lopez, Tank said he planned to “beat the crap out of him when I see him. Really.”

Davis targeted three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in a blockbuster lightweight unification bout this fall. However, talks fell through when Lomachenko decided to remain inactive for the remainder of the year rather than face Davis.

Needing an opponent, the Baltimore-born Davis turned to Roach, a WBA junior lightweight titleholder from Washington, D.C.

Regarding Lomachenko’s decision to withdraw from the fight, Tank said, “I think he wasn’t in the mood at that moment.”
