Spotify Wrapped drops Taylor Swift gesture before release

Spotify Wrapped drops Taylor Swift gesture before release

While music fans are still eagerly awaiting Spotify Wrapped this year, the streaming platform has teased fans with a nod to Taylor Swift.

Every year, the audio streaming giant releases insights into subscribers’ individual music tastes based on the most listened to songs, artists and genres. Spotify Wrapped also evaluates your data to compare it to broader listening trends. After publication, many users share their personalized music summary on social media platforms.

This campaign launched in December 2016 and has been released every year since. It’s usually released in late November or December, but at the time of writing it hasn’t been available on people’s Spotify accounts yet, so this is the latest version released in the last few years.

Now people online have pointed out that Spotify is using friendship bracelets, which have become synonymous with Swift, to announce the year-end release. And some theorize that Spotify Wrapped will be released on December 4th at 10 a.m. ET.

Newsweek emailed Spotify and a Swift spokesperson for comment outside of normal business hours on Wednesday.

The X account (formerly Twitter) @SwiftNYC, which regularly posts updates about the singer, re-shared a clip of a video graphic released by Spotify. The makings of a friendship bracelet float in there. “Spotify uses friendship bracelets to tease Spotify Wrapped…” the caption reads.

The clip was first posted by user @kaiamal13

At Swift concerts it is now common for fans, so-called Swifties, to exchange friendship bracelets with each other. The lyrics inspired the trend in the singer’s song “You’re on Your Own, Kid” of hers midnight Album.

Swift is expected to be the No. 1 most-streamed artist again this year. With over 26.1 billion streams, she was the most streamed artist on Spotify worldwide and in the US in 2023. This was the first time she topped the year-end global artist charts.

Another Swift fan account on X, @chartstswift, shared his theory about when Spotify Wrapped will finally release.

“Spotify Wrapped will officially release on Wednesday at 10 a.m. EST. Taylor Swift is expected to be the No. 1 artist for another year,” the post reads. At the time of writing, it has been viewed more than a million times.

This year, people joked about trying to curate their style at the last minute, with Spotify subscribers sharing in posts on X how they tried to hack the system by listening to certain songs over and over again.

However, there’s bad news for people hoping to change their Wrapped at the 11th hour, as Spotify only collects your listening data from January 1st to October 31st.

This Instagram story isn’t the first time Spotify has honored Swift. In May, the streaming platform paid special tribute to the singer and her record-breaking Eras tour by creating a playlist of songs from her official setlist.

After a break following dates in Asia and Australia, Swift restarted the tour on May 9 in Paris, where she debuted a new setlist that included songs from her latest album. The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD)published April 19th.

Spotify shared the new tour setlist, with the playlist containing 44 songs approximately three hours long. The titles range from “Cruel Summer” to her lover Album for “Down Bad” by TTPD.

Once it’s live, your personalized summary of what you’ve listened to most this year should appear on the home screen with the message: “Your 2024 Wrapped is here.” This should be among your six most recent listens.

Spotify has previously reminded users that it may not appear on their account if the app is not up to date, adding that an up-to-date app means you “get a fully optimized Wrapped experience.”

“When the time comes for the big reveal of your personalized hearing trends for 2024, you want to be ready,” the company said in a statement. “Plus, you can easily share your unique finds or fun tidbits from your years of listening with friends on social media.”
