Avalanche’s Scott Wedgewood reacts to stunning performance in wild comeback against Sabres

The Buffalo Sabers had everything under control on Tuesday night against the visiting Colorado Avalanche and took a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game thanks to two goals from Tage Thompson as well as goals from JJ Peterka and Beck Malenstyn.

It looked like the Sabers were within easy reach of two points – until they weren’t. The Avalanche shocked the Sabers and the fans in attendance by coming back with five unanswered goals, including Artturi Lehkonen’s game-winner with just over four minutes left in the third period.

Newly signed Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood was forced into action after starter Alexander Georgiev conceded four early goals. Wedgewood kept the Sabers at bay and secured the win in a game that started disastrously for his new team but ended in a win.

As he later put it, he was just happy that he could help his new team through X.

“Credit to the guys, I didn’t have to see much in the third period until we took the lead and then obviously you play management (hockey),” Wedgewood explained. “I came in there to try and stop the bleeding and tonight was a good night for me to do that.”

Wedgewood finished the game with 22 saves and kept the Sabers off the scoreboard after replacing Georgiev.

Wedgewood left the Dallas Stars as a free agent last offseason and signed a two-year contract with the Nashville Predators to back up Juuse Saros; He was part of a major free agent signing from Nashville that also included Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei.

But the Predators got off to a confusingly slow start, which was completely unexpected given their offseason additions. After appearing in just four games for Nashville, he was traded to the Avalanche last weekend in exchange for Justus Annunen.

The win was his second of the season, albeit in a new jersey; He previously helped the Predators defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 26.
