Snow and rain ahead – news, weather, sports from Boston

While we start off dry today, clouds will fill in the afternoon and some rain and snow showers will begin to break out in the early evening. The rain and snow will become more consistent after 10 p.m., with snow accumulating and resulting in slick travel across much of Worcester County, particularly in higher terrain. If a steady southerly wind picks up, it will warm just enough to allow rain along I-95. It’s a back-and-forth battle between 95 and 495 degrees, but snow accumulations there will be limited with temperatures in the 90 to 90 degree range.

The rain and snow will continue into the morning before easing from west to east between 8 and 10 a.m.

Additional snow squalls/snow showers are likely midday/early afternoon tomorrow as the atmosphere is unstable.

All in all, while a slushy layer of up to an inch will fall at around 495, the majority of the accumulating snow will be west of 495 as 2 to 4 inches will fall across much of Worcester County. At 1,000 feet elevation, it could be 4 to 6 inches locally in central and northern Worcester County in some locations where temperatures remain at or just below freezing.

As we dry out, a gusty wind will develop in the mid to late afternoon. It will be cool for lighting the Boston tree.

It will remain cold and windy on Friday. The weekend is cool, but not that windy.
