Although there have been 13 December jackpot wins since the Mega Millions began in 2002, only one has been higher than the current estimated prize of $541 million. On December 17, 2013, winners in California and Georgia shared a $648 million jackpot. And it is only the third time that a Mega Millions jackpot of more than 500 million US dollars was offered in December – two years ago the jackpot skyrocketed beyond this amount and grew towards a whopping 1.3 million US dollars finally won in Maine on January 13, 2023.

The Mega Millions jackpot was last won in Texas on September 10th for $810 million.

Prior to this Sept. 10 prize in the Lone Star State, the Mega Millions jackpot had only been won twice this year. On June 4, an online player from Illinois was awarded a $552 million windfall, and a ticket holder in New Jersey still has a whopping $1.128 billion in prize money waiting for him. No one has yet come forward to claim this jackpot as of March 26th. If unclaimed, this ticket will expire on March 26, 2025 and the unpaid prize will revert to the applicable participating Mega Millions jurisdiction.

According to Mega Millions, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington, DC and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 for a game.
