Newly released photos released by the New York Police Department show the face of the gunman who authorities say killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson early Wednesday, Dec. 4.

The suspect is still at large.

Police did not say where the photos were taken, but a law enforcement source said they were New York Times that the shooter had visited a Starbucks located about two blocks from the crime scene.

According to police, the suspect fled toward Central Park on an electric Citi bicycle after firing at least three shots at the 50-year-old Thompson outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan just before 6:45 a.m. Wednesday. The shooting occurred as Thompson entered the hotel for an investor conference, according to officials with the New York Police Department, who added that the health care executive was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

At a news conference on Wednesday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch suggested that the gunman intentionally targeted the CEO in a “brazen, targeted attack.” Detective Chief Joseph Kenny added that the shooter appeared to be “proficient” with firearms.

“This does not appear to be a random act of violence,” Tisch noted.

In an interview with NBC News, Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, said he received threats before the fatal shooting.

“Yes, there were some threats, I basically don’t know, lack of reporting? I don’t know any details,” she said. “All I know is that he said there were some people who threatened him.”

According to Local Channel2 Now, Thompson had two children with Paulette and the family lives in Maple Grove, Minnesota.

The suspect is described as a man with light skin, wearing a tan or cream jacket, a black face mask, black and white sneakers and carrying a “very distinctive gray backpack,” Kenny said. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Thompson was named CEO of the company in April 2021, according to a biography on UnitedHealthcare’s company website. He previously served as CEO of the company’s government programs, including the Medicare program. According to his bio, he joined the company in 2004.

Parent company UnitedHealth Group said in a statement released Wednesday that it was “deeply saddened and shocked” after learning of Thompson’s killing.

“Brian was a valued colleague and friend to all who worked with him,” the company said, adding that it was “working closely with the New York Police Department” on the investigation.
